If we are going to see any changes for good in our community then we are going to have to work together in making it happen. There must be a re-kindling of community spirit and involvement.

We will discuss ways in which we can join together to help our children grow, reduce crime and substance abuse, give our 'street kids' a better chance in life, learn to care about our neighbours and combine our business, family, school and local resources to make a difference.

We have established a discussion forum (accessible by becoming a member of the CEPNZ or a Friend of the CEPNZ) for like minded people within the whole of the NZ community in order to:

  • Draw on the experience and comments of others.

  • Establish a link between teachers, mothers, fathers, students, business leaders and members of society committed to making a difference within their local community and New Zealand society as a whole.

  • Assist schools (under their direction) in their progress of Character Education and act as a liaison between schools and families through the "Parent Involvement Programme" of participating schools.

  • Assist schools (under their direction) in their implementation of our Truancy Resource Pack to help combat unauthorised absentees from school.

  • Help schools raise funds or find sponsors for schools that want to partake in the Character Education Programme but have limited financial resources (see our "Sponsorship" page arranged through the Suburban Internet Promotions web site).

Join in with the CEPNZ and those schools that are using our programme by 'sticking your neck out' and getting involved. Give your suggestions, join up coming projects and become the citizen of character you were born to be. Together, we can make a difference.

Now lets take a look at the first way in which true character can be restored to the community.

Community Responsibility:

Every individual within the community has the responsibility to assist the Police by respecting the rights, property and freedom of others and reporting crime within their community.

One of the major problems that has arisen to the public eye is that of "P", reported as the worst drug to hit our streets.

Police resources are limited and therefore any assistance we can give them in reporting suspected manufacturers and dealers would be our responsibility. This drug has the potential to ruin the lives and character of hundreds of our children if those involved are not stopped.

Things to look out for include:

  • A large amount of traffic going in and out of your neighbours property and driveway.
  • These visitors not staying long or coming and going at all hours of the day and night.
  • Increased activity in your neighbours kitchen, wash-house or garage at night.
If you notice any or all of these events or any suspicious behaviour, phone your local Police Station and discuss your concerns with them. The misleading notions that you would be "narking" or "telling tales" or "dobbing-in" is a mind-set that needs to be broken. These are all characteristics of irresponsibility. Crime must be stopped and you would be doing the offender and your community a favour by helping the authorities to take action - it IS your responsibility to report any actions you suspect to be criminal even if these people are your current friends or family.

If you do not take action, how will you feel if you eventually discover that a person has been murdered by someone else who had been supplied with "P" by your neighbour?

Also, when your out and about on the streets, if you see what you believe to be suspicious actions, take a note of it and report it at your earliest convenience. If you know that your neighbour is out but hear or see someone there - report it! (see the link above on how to report a crime).

Let me leave you with these quotes from the book "Character" by Samuel Smiles:

The man of character is conscientious. He puts his conscience into his work, into his words, into his every action.

The good and the great draw others after them; they lighten and lift up all who are within reach of their influence.

It is the men that advance in the highest and best directions, who are the true beacons of human progress.

Nations have their character to maintain as well as individuals; and under constitutional governments--where all classes more or less participate in the exercise of political power--the national character will necessarily depend more upon the moral qualities of the many than of the few. And the same qualities which determine the character of individuals, also determine the character of nations. Unless they are high minded, truthful, honest, virtuous, and courageous, they will be held in light esteem by other nations, and be without weight in the world. To have character, they must needs also be reverential, disciplined, self- controlling, and devoted to duty.
