Australian Truancy Resource Pack
This resource pack has been produced to help Australian schools combat the problem of truancy within their communities. The New Zealand version of these resources is currently being used by over 70% schools throughout the country since its availability from January 2004.
Recent news states: "The Auditor-General found: School absence and truancy are increasing statewide. Year 9 students miss more than a month, on average. Almost 50 per cent of absences are unexplained. Lazy parents fail to explain absences in 70 per cent of cases. On any day 10,000 students might be absent from school. Absenteeism in Year 5 has soared 44 per cent since 1996."
This Truancy Resource Pack includes:
- Guidelines on how to use all the resources.
- posters of all sizes for local businesses and retailers (to print and edit from the CD-ROM) to assist schools in combating truancy. These posters advertise that the business/shop that displays the poster will not serve youth under the age of 16 during school hours and that they may ask to see the Authorised Permission slip from the youth or any accompanying adult.
- Information Sheet for businesses (to be customised by each school) to accompany the posters on how they can assist your school in combating truancy and how to use the online Australian Truancy Reporting System.
- Listing of your school on the online Australian Truant Reporting System (click here for the Australian example or here for the successful NZ example). Reports will be sent directly to your school by email.
- Attendance and Anti-Truancy Posters (to print from the CD-ROM) for use in the school.
- "Parent Declaration of Commitment" to the Attendance of their children at your school. To to given to all parents/guardians to sign to ensure they understand your school's policy on their responsibility to ensure the attendance of their children at your school. The signing of this document would also make it easier to enforce the requirements of the Australian Education Act 1958.
- Authorised permission forms to be used for all absenteeism.
- Guidelines of suggested, extra procedures for teachers and staff to follow on noting non-attendance.
- How to identify students who may become potential truants and how to prevent this from happening.
- Idea for fund raising from local businesses to recover cost of this Truancy Resource Pack.
- How to enrich the total learning experience to ensure students desire to be at school.
- Guideline sheets for students on how to set goals and avoid peer pressure.
- Guideline on how to motivate students to become more involved in mainstream activities.
